It’s difficult to imagine that survivors of suicide could feel “thankful” after experiencing such a major life tragedy, but, today, we would like to wish all of you a very Happy Thanksgiving. It’s true, survivors have to dig a little deeper to reach those emotions, but the fact is, there are still many things we can be grateful for. We can still experience feelings of thanks amidst sorrow.
- We can relish in the memories, photos and videos of our loved one and the time we had with them on this earth. We can still carry pieces of them with us and help extend their legacy.
- We can embrace the support and resources available to survivors, which continue to grow each day. From this blog and other websites, to books, our counselors, support groups, community walks and the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention.
- We can take comfort in the voices of other survivors who have opened up to share their stories, helping to reduce the stigma of suicide.
- We can approach each day with our continued hopes and dreams, while taking time to savor the little things – a blossoming flower, a sunset or a delicious meal around the holidays.
- We can also appreciate the strides we make every single day, some days more than others, in our healing and progress along the grief journey.
Happy Thanksgiving.
Love- Becky and Jessica
